Exam Preparation Courses at Callan School

Which courses do we run?

At Callan School, we run regular courses for the following exams:

• PET - Preliminary English Test
  PET is a general English exam at intermediate level, or CEFR B1.
  This is approximately Callan Method Stage 5.

• FCE - First Certificate in English
  FCE is a general English exam at upper-intermediate level, or CEFR B2.
  This is approximately Callan Method Stages 9 and 10.

• CAE - Certificate in Advanced English
  CAE is a general English exam at advanced level, or CEFR C1.
  This is approximately Callan Method Stage 12.

• IELTS - International English Language Testing System Many universities and colleges in the UK require a good IELTS score from students before they study or train at their establishment. For more information on this exam, click here.

Courses involve practice in all areas relevant to the exams. Teachers use various materials, including real past exam papers. Students are also expected to do written homework. Listening and speaking practice for exams is done in class.

PET Preparation Course

• This course is one hour each day for 4 weeks, a total of 20 hours.
• You can take this exam in March, June and December.
• Courses are at different times throughout the day.

FCE Preparation Course

• This course is 1 hour a day for 4 weeks, and then 2 hours a day for 4 weeks, a total of 60 hours.
• You can take this exam in March, June, August and December.
• Courses are at different times throughout the day.

CAE Preparation Course

• This course is 2 hours a day for 8-9 weeks. A total of 80-90 hours.
• You can take this exam in March, June and December.
• The timetable for the CAE courses depends on demand.

IELTS Preparation Course

• This course is 2 hours a day for 4 weeks. A total of 40 hours.
• It is possible to take this exam throughout the year.
• The timetable for the IELTS courses depends on demand.

How can I join a course?

The cost of lessons for exam courses is the same as for normal Callan Method lessons (see Course Fees). However, the process for joining the courses is different. Please follow the following instructions:

PET

• Please phone us for more information (020 7437 4573) or visit the school and speak to one of our receptionists in person.

FCE

• Please phone us for more information (020 7437 4573) or visit the school and speak to one of our receptionists in person.
• Before you join a course for FCE, you will need to come to the school and take a written ‘pre-test’ so that we can check your level and advise you whether to do the course or wait.

CAE

• Please phone 020 7437 4573 and ask to speak to Duncan McLeay, the course organiser. He will provide you with more information. However, a better idea would be to visit the school and speak to Duncan in person.
• Before you join a course for CAE, you will need to come to the school and take a written ‘pre-test’ so that we can check your level and advise you whether to do the course or wait.
